DOC Alentejo, Portugal

Rovisco Garcia was born in the core of the Carvalho Rovisco Garcia family in Avis, Alto Alentejo. In the year of 1998, Maria Antónia de Carvalho Rovisco Garcia passed on the land management to her two sons, Francisco and António José. A new dynamic began and from that point on there were major investments in both olive oil and vineyards.
The family´s infatuation with the wine business, plus the existence of a good terroir in the region (combining both favorable soils and sun exposure), led, in 2001, to the decision of expanding the area to the current 28 hectares of new vineyards in the Alto Alentejo.
In Rovisco Garcia’s winery, the choice of grape varieties was always carefully made, selecting those that would thrive better in Alto Alentejo and from which it would be possible to obtain grapes of superior quality, essential to making premium wines.
Throughout the process of setting up the new vineyards, the key issue for the winery was that a good wine always starts in the vineyard, from the variety and clone selection to the use of the most up to date vine growing technology. Now, the estates are run with great sustainability concerns, seeking the conciliation between nature conservation and economic results. Climate and soil moisture monitoring systems, together with a drip irrigation system, allow an appropriate pest, disease and water availability control. These precise viticultural technologies and practices are what’s essential to achieve high quality standards in all their portfolio wines.
For the red wines, the main grape varieties used are Aragonez and Syrah. Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon are also grown, to obtain more complex wines. Arinto and Antão Vaz were the main white wine grape varieties chosen.
Nowadays, Rovisco Garcia’s winery maintains exceptionally high standards and is always seeking to produce premium and high standard wines. In the end, the family’s dedication and commitment, the attentive selection of grape varieties, the careful cultivation and thorough winemaking allow them to achieve their goal: to obtain modern and elegant wines with the character and expressiveness of the Alentejo region.
