D.O. Conca de Barberà, Spain

Family owned eco-friendly winery that privileges sustainable farming. Their high-quality wines combine elegance and balance while the winery is well known for the incomparable beauty of the terroir and the architecture.

Gerard Foraster, early 20s, is a fourth-generation winemaker whose high quality vineyards concentrate production on a limited range of wines – producing three reds and only one white – with their top-range reds being oak-aged Cabernet Sauvignon.

Located in the municipality of Montblanc, the vineyards are planted in the DO Conca de Barberà, in a lovely valley surrounded by mountains. Here, the soils are characterized by a diversity that ranges from land formed by the erosive action of the river Francol to the slopes of the Serra de Miramar, where soils are clay-limestone and poor in organic matter content. There are also vineyards near the winery itself, on the sunny slopes of the Prades mountains, where soils are calcareous, with river rocks and slate.

Typical of continental-Mediterranean climate, there is a high thermal contrast between day and night, which brings freshness and personality to the wines. The influence of the Mediterranean Sea brings more acidity to the grapes, producing fresher wine that combines structure and elegance.

Here, Mas Foraster’s motto is sustainability and quality, as they use the grapes they plant in their own vineyards organically, not using synthetic products or herbicides. The wine’s expression reveals the respect for the soil and great terroir. Their approach to integrate farming aligned with a great commitment no to increase production beyond sustainable levels is what gives them a firm grip on quality.

In 9 hectares of the Mas Castells estate there are only two red varieties, which are Cabernet Sauvignon and Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo). On the overall vineyard, the winemakers have planted the following varieties: Trepat, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache and Hairy Black Grenache on the reds, and White Grenache, Chardonnay, Macabeo and Parellada for the white wines.
